People have valued the properties of Merino and sheep’s wool for centuries. Merino wool’s functional fibres have unique features that are rarely found in other materials – whether natural or synthetic.

Discover the world of merino wool
The wool fibres offer excellent insulation from cold and heat. Merino wool has a cooling effect in summer and a warming effect in winter. It helps maintain an optimal body temperature thanks to its temperature-regulating properties, which react to the external conditions (like sheep in their natural environment). The naturally curly fibres can contain up to 85% air, which stores body heat and provides insulation.
Merino wool is highly breathable. One of Merino wool’s unique properties is that it is made up of hydrophile fibres (fibres that absorb water). When we sweat, Merino wool can absorb up to 35% of its own weight in moisture. The moisture is transported to the middle of the fibre, meaning the material stays warm and comfortable even when it’s wet. The wool also dries quickly, keeping the wearer from getting cold even at low temperatures.
Merino wool is especially soft and doesn’t scratch. The fibres are soft enough that their shape responds to the wearer’s touch and they have a pleasant feel. In addition, CALIDA only uses fibres that are classified as ‘superfine’. If you do experience any itching or scratching, however, you can opt for materials that are made from a blend of MicroModal® and Merino wool, for example.
Merino wool products can be placed in the washing machine at 40°C without any problems. Its unique fibre structure also gives it self-cleaning properties, making frequent washing unnecessary.
Merino wool products have antibacterial properties. The fibres’ special structure prevents bacteria from settling. Furthermore, the chemical structure of the wool ensures that bacteria that form odours are broken down. After a day of strenuous physical activity, the products can thus simply be aired out, ideally in damp conditions.
Merino wool is a natural, renewable raw material that is entirely biodegradable – making it the perfect material for CALIDA’s sustainability strategy. What’s more, wool fabrics are extremely long-lasting and need to be washed less often than other materials thanks to their self-cleaning properties.
