Why Breathable Fabrics for Sleep Are So Important
A good night's sleep can make you feel better. This becomes particularly noticeable on warm summer nights, when it can be difficult to sleep because your bedding feels uncomfortably sticky against your skin. The result: The next day, we may feel less productive and simply exhausted. Choosing breathable fabrics for sleep can help create a comfortable sleep environment – and this is where CALIDA has always focused its attention: Our breathable nightwear feels pleasantly soft and can help support a balanced feeling throughout the night.

The key points
Breathable fabrics can support temperature balance, moisture management and comfortable air circulation while you sleep.
Especially at night, fabrics with regulating properties can contribute to a comfortable sleep environment – both in summer and winter.
Our CALIDA pyjamas use breathable materials such as cotton, TENCEL™ and silk.

Breathability in the bedroom: What does it mean?
“Breathable” – for many people, the term initially sounds more like something associated with sportswear than a feature that is also beneficial for nightwear and bedding. In fact, breathable fabrics allow good air circulation and can help reduce heat build-up while you sleep.
But how can you tell whether and to what extent a fabric is actually breathable? There is a formula that measures the water vapour permeability of a material in grams per square metre (g/m²). The higher the value, the more moisture can pass through the material within 24 hours – which can contribute to a pleasantly dry feeling against the skin.
Breathable fabrics have a value of more than 5,000 g/m², while high-performance materials such as TENCEL™ can achieve significantly higher breathability values of up to 20,000 g/m².
Why mattresses, bedding & pyjamas should be breathable
A breathable bedroom starts with the mattress – but it does not end there. Breathable mattress toppers, sheets & co. can contribute to a comfortable sleeping environment – but the textiles that lie directly against your skin are particularly important for comfort.
While nightwear made from certain synthetic materials can retain more heat and moisture, breathable sleepwear can help transport moisture away from the body and support natural thermoregulation. This can help create a more comfortable sleep environment.
These breathable materials can contribute to sleep comfort
At CALIDA, we use selected materials with different properties across our range. You will find not only pyjamas with balancing properties, but also styles with specific cooling and warming properties – they all have one thing in common: They are made from breathable fabrics that can contribute to a comfortable sleep environment. Find out more about these materials below!
Cotton: Versatile properties for every season
Whether summer or winter – whether for adults, children or babies: Cotton is a true all-rounder for every wardrobe thanks to its air-permeable and moisture-regulating properties. CALIDA cotton pyjamas feel pleasantly soft and gentle against the skin – whether you choose our regulating styles for year-round wear or our warming cotton flannel pyjamas.
TENCEL™: A soft feel and a pleasantly dry sensation
TENCEL™ is a popular fibre for breathable fabrics. The fibres made from wood are characterised by cooling and moisture-regulating properties. A CALIDA TENCEL™ pyjama set feels silky soft and can help transport moisture away from the body – even on warm nights or when you sweat more heavily.
And if you have ever wondered about the difference between TENCEL™ Modal and TENCEL™ Lyocell: Modal is made from beech wood and is known for its particularly soft feel against the skin, while Lyocell is made from eucalyptus. The slightly firmer fabric is characterised by good resistance to wear and high breathability. The fibre can absorb around 50% more moisture than cotton!
Silk: Comfort on warm nights
Light, cooling and elegant: Silk has temperature-balancing properties, making it well suited to warm nights. For an especially soft and smooth feel against the skin, our Moonlight Dreams collection features beautiful pyjamas made from a TENCEL™ Modal-silk blend that can provide a pleasant temperature balance even on warm nights.
If you also want to enjoy silky-soft nightwear in winter, the CALIDA range also includes warming pyjama trousers and tops made from a breathable wool-silk blend, for example in our True Confidence series or the Silky Wool Joy collection.
Linen: The ultimate summer fabric
Linen is known for its airy structure, good air circulation and quick-drying properties. The fibre, which is made from the flax plant, can feel pleasantly cool and is particularly suitable for humid summer days and nights – whether you are on holiday or in your top-floor apartment.
Conclusion
If you want to wake up feeling refreshed every day, it is important to create a comfortable sleep environment at night. Breathable fabrics for sleep can contribute to a pleasant sleep climate. Whether TENCEL™, cotton or silk: CALIDA offers pyjamas with different material properties – from temperature-balancing and breathable to cooling or warming. With the right nightwear, you can create a sleep environment that suits your personal needs.
