Why do we have World Sleep Day?

The World Sleep Society, which was originally founded by the World Sleep Federation (WSF) and the Association of Sleep Medicine (WASM), first launched World Sleep Day in 2008. This annual day aims to raise awareness of the importance of sleep and provide people with valuable information about this topic.

Why is it so important for people to get a good night’s sleep?

R. Cristofaro: Sleep affects our mental and physical health. Getting enough sleep makes us more productive.

Think of it as a triangle: exercise, nutrition and sleep are all linked. All three aspects are important for our health and have a major impact on our performance. Sleep is therefore one of the key factors for good health, which is why it is so important for us.

What do we need for a good night’s sleep?

R. Cristofaro: A combination of various factors is required to ensure a good, restful night’s sleep. Here are my tips:

  • Screen time: avoid using screens/mobile phones at least 1 hour before going to bed.

  • Nutrition/alcohol: avoid drinking alcohol before going to bed. And eat a light meal in the evening.

  • Noise and light: make sure your bedroom is quiet and dark.

  • Bedding/sleepwear: good bed linen and sleepwear are ideal for a good night’s sleep.

How does good sleepwear contribute to a good night’s sleep?

R. Cristofaro: The right sleepwear is the basis for a restful night’s sleep and is therefore very important. You should choose loose-fitting pyjamas that allow your body to relax. I recommend Tencel™, for example – a material that helps maintain an ideal body temperature. While you sleep, its natural fibres keep your skin feeling nice and cool.

The combination is what makes it!

In summary – a good night’s sleep, in conjunction with a balanced diet and sufficient exercise, is achieved by a combination of the following factors:

  • A pleasant environment

  • Sleepwear that helps maintain an ideal body temperature

  • A good pillow and duvet

  • A mattress that adapts to your body
