14 February is the day on which Saint Valentine is commemorated. Tradition has it that Saint Valentine lived during the third century AD in Rome. According to legend, he gave newly-wed couples flowers from his own garden. It is also said that those marriages always got off to a good start. Saint Valentine also performed weddings for soldiers according to Christian values, which had been strictly prohibited by imperial order. This is presumed to be the reason for Valentine’s execution on 14 February in the year 269 by command of Emperor Claudius II in Rome, making him a historic martyr. Saint Valentine is therefore considered the patron saint of lovers and those who are betrothed.
